Phil Harding started in the music industry aged 16 at London's Marquee Studios
in 1973, where he worked as an assistant engineer with some of the top producers in the world as
they recorded the great albums of the day. As Phils career progressed, a hot list of credits soon started
to stack up, with artists as diverse as The Clash, Killing Joke, Toyah and
Matt Bianco, all taking advantage of Phils ever-growing reputation
as a top engineer.
By the mid 1980s, the name of a newly formed production team Stock/Aitken/Waterman was added to the list. Phil engineered and mixed their first chart successes (Divine and Hazell Dean) and their breakthrough and first No. 1 single, 'You Spin Me Round' by Dead Or Alive. The hits came almost faster than you could count them for Mel & Kim, Bananarama, Rick Astley, Depeche Mode, Erasure, Pet Shop Boys and Kylie Minogue at the famous PWL Studios in London.
By the early 1990s, Phil left PWL to set up his own production company with Ian Curnow at the Strongroom Studio complex in Shoreditch, London. A further deluge of hits followed as producers for artists such as: East 17 (including the Christmas No, 1, 'Stay Another Day'), Deuce, Boyzone, 911, Caught In The Act and Let Loose.
Since the 2000s, Phil has become involved in music education and was appointed co-chair of JAMES (Joint Audio Media Education Support), involved in Masterclasses, Accreditations and course planning, as well as being a director of the MPG (Music Producers Guild).
During the last decade, Phil has worked with Lamont Dozier in Los Angeles and mixed Cliff Richard's 'Soulicious' album, published the book, 'PWL From The Factory Floor' and accompanying CD, 'Phil Harding Club Mixes of the 80s'; and in 2017, completed a PhD at Leeds Beckett University.
In 2019, Phil has published another book, 'Pop Music Production' (in the Routledge Press academic series 'Perspectives on Music Production'), which examines the pop music culture, business, songwriting and production processes around his work in the 1990s. 2020 sees Phil embark on a tour of lectures around the UK.
